Tell me about yourself? your response can make or break your personal brand
Personal brand
It’s one of the most important answers we give in life and can make or break your personal brand. Tell me about yourself? It’s a question that’s asked regularly by employers, new acquaintances, and potential clients, but somehow catches so many of us off guard.
How we respond tells the world who we are, so it makes sense that our response should represent us in the best light, be authentic and tell our story.
What’s your personal brand?
The story of you is best described as your brand story. Whether you are a small business owner, an entrepreneur or an executive in a large company, stay at home mother or a volunteer, we all have a brand and a story.
You might be thinking right now why do I need a brand? or I’m not a brand? The answer is that you already have a brand. It’s what people say about you when describing you to someone else. You can learn more about personal branding here.
How do others view you?
Everything we do contributes to our brand including how we speak, write, the clothes we wear, the car we drive and who we choose to spend our time. It’s also the images of us on social media sites, our likes and comments and the videos or stories we share on Facebook all contribute to our brand’s overall image.
If you are up for it, try asking your friends how they describe you to other people.
Create your own brand
As the owner of your brand, it’s up to you to create your own image. But keep in mind that the most powerful brands are always authentic. There is no point pretending you are an environmental vegan warrior when your car is a gas guzzling SUV and your clothes of choice are made from fur and leather.
So the next time someone asks you “tell me about yourself?” Don’t leave it to others to determine your brand, have your story ready. You can read more about personal branding here.
