How to Thrive in the Executive Search Process

You’ve found a role that you want.

It ticks all the boxes and you want to throw your hat in the ring

The only problem is that it’s been years since you applied for a role or had a job interview.

You are not alone.

Many successful professionals find themselves struggling to navigate the executive search process.

The executive search process is akin to a game of Survivor

There are a number of different stages

And all of them require a strategic approach

But before you even get in the game you need to be ‘match fit ‘

This means

A resume that is modern and relevant and positions you correctly and is tailored to the role you want

And a LinkedIn profile and online presence that makes you stand out

Most people don’t make it past this point and wonder why they never hear back from the recruiter.

If you DO make it through then you are in Stage 1 – Congratulations!

Stage 1 – The getting to know you stage

Usually a phone call with the recruitment agency or the internal HR Director

At this stage you need to win them over with your energy, professionalism and validate your experience as outlined on your resume

This is a great time to find out more about the role and what they’re looking for

Your goal here is to get on the short list or to the first interview

Stage 2 – (3-5 interviews) – Proving you can do the job

These interviews are all about selling yourself and demonstrating your knowledge and experience

You’ll want to have numerous examples that reflect the key leadership capabilities the role requires

For executive roles your ability to lead and influence is key

Stage – 3 – Proving you are the right cultural fit

This stage often sees you meeting with other stakeholders and its often more about cultural fit

You might also meet with more senior stakeholders such as board members

Be sure to ask interesting questions that demonstrate your industry and company knowledge and people and culture focus

They may want to pressure test any concerns they have with you so be prepared

This is not a rubber stamp exercise!

Stage 4 – The offer

You got the job – Congratulations!

Time to negotiate

To ensure success and that you glide through these stages remember to

Prepare with examples that demonstrate your experience and knowledge

Practice with a coach or a colleague

And bring a Positive attitude– be someone people want to work with
